Pelicans VS Grizzlies: Davis Drops The Ball

 
After the loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Anthony Davis was frustrated. Mainly at his teammates. Davis told reporters: "We had too many mental breakdowns," Davis said. "We're not talking out there and so, therefore, we have mental breakdowns that gave them easy layups at the basket and open shots." Davis ended by saying, "It's definitely frustrating. We can't get a win, it's frustrating, Whatever we need to do, we need to do it fast."

Well, Davis called out his teammates and they responded, the very next game. They played a huge role in bringing the game into overtime where they'd eventually lose. Anthony Davis though? He was non-existent. After criticizing his teammates for poor play, he came out the next game completely dropping the ball. His teammates did their part, but he clearly didn't do his. He was 3-13 on the night. He had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 5 turnovers! You can see Davis's shot chart below.

 As you can see, Anthony Davis didn't play too well. He only took 4 of his 13 sots in the paint. Only 4! He was settling for far too many jumpshots and when you add the 5 turnovers in there, it just makes matters worse. Marc Gasol and the Memphis Grizzlies made it tough on him, real tough. We've seen them do it to Karl-Anthony Towns twice this season, and now they've done it to Davis.

Defensively, Davis wasn't that great. He wasn't paying that much attention. He had the 3rd worst defensive rating on his team. His teammates were much more active. In overtime is where it fell apart though. Davis clearly wasn't engaged defensively and wasn't trying whatsoever. One possession in OT he left Marc Gasol wide open for a 3 pointer, and gave no effort defensively. This would ultimately lead to the loss in OT. While Davis was clearly a problem, the Pelicans refused to sub him out in OT.

Davis dropped the ball for his team. They did everything he wanted them to do, and he didn't show up. He had 1 point in overtime. Davis didn't come to play. The Grizzlies really got to him.

Now, on to the section where I talk about how much I love the Memphis Grizzlies this season. David Fizdale is amazing. The Grizzlies couldn't have hired a better head coach (other than re-hiring Dave Joerger). He's getting his team to play amazing defense. Not only that, but he's made almost every player on that team a 3-point threat. They are now so tough to guard. Take the Grit and Grind, and give them a 3-point shot, that's what you got.

There are 3 main things in basketball you have to pay attention to. Offense, Defense, and rebounding. While the Grizzlies didn't play great offensively, they did sure did play great in the other categories. The Grizzlies had 52 rebounds on the night.

Defensively, this team was amazing. The team had 12 steals on the night. JaMychal Green had 4 blocks on the night. They were everywhere and they were making Davis's life tough. He wasn't allowed to get a touch in the paint, and that's how they played him all night. This Grizzlies team drew 4 charges in the game. 4 CHARGES! Do you know how tough it is to draw a charge in the NBA? It's tough! And they drew 4! The Memphis Grizzlies won this game by sheer hustle and amazing defense. I am amazed at how great this team played defensively in this game.

Hats off to the Memphis Grizzlies. They won that game, and they clearly didn't want to lose. However, I'm very disappointed in Davis. His teammates were amazing, but he was a -23 in the game. That was worse than any of his teammates. You can't criticize your teammates and then go out and do the things you criticized them on. Hopefully Davis learned from this and can get back to the level he was playing at.

Spurs VS Grizzlies (Game 4)

Spurs Win Series 4-0

The Spurs won. Nothing special. The Grizzlies season is over. Now there is something special. I have the upmost respect for coach Dave Joerger. If you look at his press conference, he was proud of his guys. He was so proud of the fact that his guys fought through adversity, and they made the playoffs.

The Spurs had to take a lot of contested shots. They also happened to make 52.1% of their contested shots. The poor Grizzlies were flying all over the court to keep up with the Spurs passes. But each and every Grizzlies player ran as hard as they could. By the end of the game, they were tired out, but finished out the last final minutes as hard as they could. The Grizzlies fought out each possession which says a lot about their character.

This was probably a great thing for players like Matt Barnes. All of these guys on the Grizzlies roster had the chance to see what they could do on the court and they got a chance to prove themselves. Teams are going to look at Matt Barnes now as a very good defensive player that has offensive capabilities. Matt Barnes got to develop his offense, something he wouldn't have been able to do on any other team. The same goes for every player on this Grizzlies team.

The Spurs were the better team. They were fundamentally sound and there was no way they were going to let the Grizzlies win. But the heart was there, and that was all Dave Joerger could ask of from his guys.   

Spurs VS Grizzlies (Game 3)

Spurs Lead Series 3-0

This was the best Spurs VS Grizzlies game we have seen in this series. It was close throughout the whole game. The Grizzlies fought and they really battled through this game. I'm sure Dave Joeger is proud of what the team did.

First, I'd like to point out that Zach Randolph finally had that 20 point game. He played well which really helped out the Grizzlies. Matt Barnes also had 17 points. This team just wanted to win. They had a total of 18 second chance points. They just battled their way to the finish line.

There was just one problem. They Spurs could get production from anyone no matter who they put in. 10 players on the Spurs registered at least 2 points. The Grizzlies don't have a deep bench, and they couldn't afford to keep their bench in the game. The starters go too tired and fatigue set in. The Spurs didn't have that problem simply because they have such a great bench.

I think this series will be a sweep. I don't think there is much the Grizzlies can do to win a game in this series. Matt Barnes guarded Kawhi Leonard and Kawhi had 32 points. They just can't stop this Spurs offense. The Grizzlies had a great night, but they still couldn't mangage to grab a win. 

Spurs VS Grizzlies (Game 2)

Spurs lead series 2-0

There really isn't anything that the Grizzlies can do. The Spurs are getting great shots. The Grizzlies aren't. The Grizzlies can't win without Zach Randolph having a 20+ game. They need him to produce and even then they really don't stand a chance.

As for the Spurs, they are perfect defensively. Everybody on the team got involved in the game, all 13 players scored, and not one of them had a negative +/- advantage. That is really all I have to say. There isn't much you can say about that game or the series itself. I hate to say it but the Grizzlies don't stand a chance.

Spurs VS Grizzlies (Game 1)

Grizzlies fans, I feel so bad for how all of you probably feel. You made it to the post season and now you have no Marc Gasol or Mike Conley. You are matched up with the Spurs and they are looking like they could sweep your team. However, this Grizzlies team continues to fight, and you guys should be proud of that.

Now, let's just push this out of the way, if the Grizzlies are to win a game, they are going to need probably at least a  20 point game from Zach Randolph. They can't be having him scoring 6 points, shooting 3-13 from the field and expect a win. It just isn't going to happen. Matt Barnes is going to have a tough time as he is being guarded by Kawhi Leonard. They need Z-Bo to score.

Next, Tony Parker and Patty Mills killed this team. It was these 2 guys that Jordan Farmar had a lot of problems with. He can't guard them. The frontcourt is killing this Grizzlies team and they really miss Mike Conley for his defensive skill. They could really use him right now.

The Spur also made some tough contested shots. This was tough because the Grizzlies played some great defense. The Spurs shot 59.1% on contest field goals. But credit the Spurs, they moved the ball around really well and they got everyone involved. Everyone got off some good looks on their team and they had the ball moving around real good.

The Spurs could improve more too. They let the Grizzlies shoot 44% from three. They also let Lance Stephenson keep the Grizzlies in the game during the first half. They had some defensive mishaps here and there and while they might fly here against the Grizzlies, every possession will count against the Warriors and Thunder.

What Is Wrong With Philly!?

I can think of many words that describe the Philadelphia 76ers. A lot of them have to do with losing. Just the other day I came up with a new word to describe them. Confusing. If you haven't heard, the Sixers have just waiver 4 year guard, Tony Wroten.

Tony Wroten started his career off with the Memphis Grizzlies who drafted him 25th overall in the 2012 NBA draft. He played 7.8 minutes per game in 35 games with the Grizzlies and was sent and recalled from the D-League multiple times. After averaging 2.6 points and shooting very low from the field in his first season, the Grizzlies didn't look at Wroten with much value. They decided to trade Wroten. The 76ers would get a steal out of the trade as they traded away a top 50 second round pick. The 76ers of course would keep that pick and it would turn out to be K.J. McDaniels. So what would end up happening is that the Grizzlies would give Wroten away for a pick they would never aquire.

Wroten's first year with the 76ers was a good overall year. He would play alongside rookie of the year, Michael Carter-Williams at the guard positions. Wroten would play 72 games and start in 16 of them as he proved to the team that he could be a dynamic player. Wroten would have promising numbers at the end of the season averaging 13 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.1 steals.

Wroten's third year would be a great one, although it would be cut short with injury. As he would play just 30 games and start in 15 of them, Wroten would end up partially tearing his ACL. During the 2014-15 season, Wroten would average a stunning 16.9 points, 5.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.

This year, Tony Wroten has played just 8 games with limited minutes as he just came back from the injury. He was looking like he was going to be part of the future as it seemed like this team could have used him in the backcourt since they already had 3 lottery big men in Okafor, Embiid, and Noel. But out of nowhere, the 76ers made this trade.

The 76ers traded 2 future second round picks in exchange for Ish Smith. Smith is a 5-year player who has played for 9 teams total, and if you count Philly twice it's 10. He has averaged 4.3 points in his career. While he has had a pretty good year this year averaging 9.5 points and 5.9 assists, Smith hasn't had a steady career.

When Philly got Smith, they had to waive someone. They decided to waive Wroten. This is one of the three reasons why this trade makes no sense. It's because out of all of the players, the sixers decide to waive Wroten. Out of all of the players that should be in the D-League right now, they pick Wroten, a guy who just averaged 16.9 PPG! That makes no sense.

The other thing that doesn't make any sense is that out of all the players the sixers traded for that was worth dropping Wroten for was an inconsistent 27 year old named Ish Smith. This guy is getting into his golden days right now. He is 27 years old! Tony Wroten is 22! It would be one thing if Smith was 23 or 24 or even 25, but guess what, he is 27 years old. How long will it be before the 76ers start winning games? Maybe not even til Smith is 33. Wroten would be 28 when Smith is 23. That is what doesn't make sense about this trade. The 76ers gave up 2 second round draft picks and Tony Wroten for an aging inconsistent role player.

The third reason is because the 76ers just brought in Jerry Colangelo who was supposed to be making good moves here. Instead he just makes a trade and ends it badly. This doesn't surprise me though, because I'm not a Colangelo fan. When he was with the Phoenix Suns, he made some very, very poor moves that lead to the Suns not winning a championship with what could have been a really stacked team. I think Colangelo is very overrated and hasn't done anything special so this third thing doesn't surprise me.

I don't see the 76ers winning anytime soon. I have just lost a lot of faith in them after they released Tony Wroten. If you have any sense to make out of this, please comment below so I can at least see a little bit of sense in the 76ers transactions. As for Tony Wroten, I hope that he finds a team that values his potential and will use him to his best abilities. C'mon, this looks promising...
  

What Will Super Mario Bring To Memphis?

As you have probably heard, there has been a trade in the NBA. Take a look at the players that were involved below:

Memphis Traded: Beno Udrih, Jarnell Stokes, a future second round pick
Miami Traded: Mario Chalmers, James Ennis

This is a big trade for both teams, especially for the Grizzlies, who are currently 4-6. With the Grizzlies struggling with defense and offense right now, Mario Chalmers should be able to help improve it for sure.

Mario Chalmers has such a big impact when he is on the floor. The team's defensive rating is so much better with Chalmers on the court. In fact, the Miami Heat's defensive rating was 81.7 with Chalmers on the court, and 98.1 when Chalmers isn't on the court. Big difference right.

He also will bring shooting and passing. When Mario is on the court, the Miami Heat shoot 42.9% from 3-point range, and when he is off the court, the Heat shoot only 27.8% from 3-point range. However, this isn't because of Chalmers shooting the ball well. He has only shot 15.4% from deep this season. I think the main reason why is that Chalmers knows how to move the ball. When Chalmers is on the court, the Heat average 22 APG, but when he isn't, they only average 17.8.

One of the best things that the Grizzlies are going to get from Chalmers is offense. The Memphis Grizzlies are 29th in the league in offense, which is pretty bad considering there are 30 teams. They have an offensive rating of 94.8. Chalmers will really help on the floor and here is why. Chalmers had the best offensive rating on the Heat. It was 107.8. When he wasn't on the floor, the Miami Heat had an offensive rating of 99.7. Big difference! If he brought the Miami offense up like that, he can hopefully do the same to the Grizzlies offense.

The other main players involved in the trade is Beno Udrih. Now, I honestly don't see why the Miami Heat made this trade because Mario Chalmers had such a big impact offensively and defensively on this Miami Heat team. I don't see what Beno Udrih brings to this team that Chalmers didn't. Beno Udrih is a good overall defensive player, but he hardly affects his team on the offensive end like Chalmers does. He improves the Memphis offense by only 1.5. The assisting isn't affected that much when Beno is on the floor. There is not drastic change in the 3-point% when Beno is on the floor. I don't see why you would make a trade for Beno when you are giving up someone who is worth more. Then Jarnell Stokes has done nothing in his career. Last season he averaged 3 PPG, and he has done nothing this season but grab 2 rebounds. James Ennis on the other hand has actually done somethings, such as show off his athleticism with some amazing dunks, show us he could play defense, and gave us some points off the bench last season as he averaged 5. The Heat also received a second round pick, but how often do those turnout to actually be worth something. I don't know what the Miami Heat were thinking, but the Grizzlies clearly won this trade.

You can't forget the Mario Chalmers won 2 NBA championships as a starting point guard. This man is going to be a big impact on this Grizzlies team and I expect him to solve some of their problems. 

Warriors VS Grizzlies (game 3)

Final Score: Grizzlies win 99-89



Grizzlies lead series 2-1

The Grizzlies won another. Both teams needed the game. Now the Warriors are finding themselves in a position where they need to win the next game. Here are the things they need to change.

The Warriors need to shoot better. They shot under 25% for the second straight game. That can't be happening with this team. Curry shouldn't be missing wide open 3s. They also need to shoot better from free throw. 67.9% isn't enough. They also can't allow 19 second chance points. They really need to get their posts involved more so that Curry and Thompson can space out more. Also, Draymond Green should not be dribbling the ball all the way up the court in a late game situation. None of these things should be happening with the Warriors. None of these things. They need to change them or they will keep loosing to the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies are doing great. They aren't allowing any momentum for the Warriors. They do an excellent job of closing out. Tony Allen again had 4 steals and also had a block. They shot about 31% from 3 which is great for the Grizzlies. Marc Gasol did great as he had a total of 21 points and 15 rebounds. They are doing great when they have someone for them to take on a scoring load and the rest of the team can focus on defense. Zach Randolph also scored 22 points in the game which allowed this team to outscore the Warriors. Without their contributions, the Grizzlies would end the game with points scoring in the 70s so they absolutely need some scorers on the floor. They passed the ball really well to find lots of openings with 327 passes while the Warriors only had 256. That is great for this team to get their offense going because they need offense and great defense against a top offensive team like the Warriors. If they keep the Warriors 3 point percentage low and they have good offense, this team is likely to win the series.

Warriors VS Grizzlies (game 2)

Final Score: Grizzlies win 97-90



Series tied 1-1

Grizzlies grab home-court advantage. They played great defense and got the win. Let's take a look at what the Grizzlies did right to win this game.

The Grizzlies had a great lift from Mike Conley as he came back. While he did great on the offensive side, the whole team could really focus on defense. Tony Allen was great on defense with 4 steals. The Grizzlies themselves had a total of 13 steals. The Grizzlies made the Warriors forced up 50 contested jumpers and the Warriors couldn't even hit their uncontested jumpers. Not to mention that they were contesting and not fouling and blocking. The Grizzlies only had 2 blocks in the game. They also made their free throws. They were 18-20 from the free throw line. One thing that they could use is for Vince Carter and Jeff Green to play a little better on the floor. They could use a little more from them. They both didn't play that well and didn't bring a great offensive game which you would have imagined them to bring. Other than that this team is looking great.

The Warriors just couldn't hit shots. They were 26.1% from 3pt range. Klay Thompson was 1-6 and Curry was 2-11 from 3pt range. It wasn't that they couldn't just hit defended shots. They were 41.9% on contested jumpers. The problem was, they weren't used to taking open jumpers in the game and shot 7-24 on open shots. That can't happen. Obviously this Warriors team just had a bad shooting night. One thing I really wish they did was play David Lee a little bit more. He had only played 5:10 minutes and you have to remember this guy was a starter last year. The main problem for this Warriors team is just shooting. If they bring that up, I don't see why they can't take this series.

On to the Next Round: The Semi-Conference Finals

On to the next one. I can't believe the first round is over. It is so shocking and I can't believe it. All the great match-ups we have, and I will breakdown all of them for you.

Warriors VS Grizzlies: This is an easy one for me. I think that the Warriors will win and have an easy time is Conley isn't back. Stephen Curry (your MVP) will have an easy time with Nick Calthes and Ben Udrih. It should be easy for this Warriors team. Marc Gasol will have a tougher time with top notch defender, Andrew Bogut, guarding him. And Zach Randolph will have a really tough time with Draymond Green guarding him.

Hawks VS Wizards: Oh man, this one is tough. I think that the Hawks will win just because they have had more success this season. The only thing is that the Wizards have won a lot of late and you think that must give them more of a chance to win. John Wall is going to have to play great against Teague like he played against Lowry. Bradley Beal vs. Kyle Korver is the main match-up I will be looking at though. I think that these two teams have great match-ups with teh starting line-ups which is what makes it such a tough one to predict. Everyone is so evenly matched and no-one has an advantage.

Rockets VS Clippers: I think that the Clippers will win. The transition and inside game for the Clippers is way too good for the Rockets to handle. J.J. Redick will have to pick up his defense but I honestly think that Matt Barnes should guard James Harden for most of the series. I think that for any wins for the Rockets James Harden will do most of the "heavy lifting".

Cavaliers VS Bulls: I think that this is pretty much unpredictable. The whole Chicago Bulls roster is unpredictable. The Bulls I think could win this though. They are a great team and the Cavs will not have Kevin Love for the series and J.R. Smith for 2 games. It will be tough for this Cavaliers team. I think that Derrick Rose will have to do a lot and kind of keep Kyrie contained. The real question is, who will guard LeBron.

I am so sorry by the way. I was in Canada. I just want everyone to know, Winnipeg is a great place to go to. I got to wear a Wizards shirt without anyone being able to make fun of me and it is defiantly a friendly place to go to. Do not stay at the Days Inn there though. I give it a half a star. I had to change rooms because the doors didn't work, the TV remote didn't work, there was nasty stuff all over the bathroom floor, the AC was way too loud and barley could cool down the room (it would make random noises in the middle of the night), the Wi-Fi was the worst ever, and the TV just shut off right in the middle of Dr. Phil. It was getting intense. This lady was about to find out if her "boyfriend" was real. I felt like we could have jsut have gotten to bad rooms, but this kid name Calvin had the same problem with his room doors. So if you do go there, try pushing on the doors to open them and see if you need the key to open them. If it pushes open, you got room 209.  

Grizzlies VS Trailblazers (game 5)

Final Score: Grizzlies win 99-93



Grizzlies win series 4-1

It's all over. Another series finished. The Grizzlies just were too much for the for the hurt and lacking Trailblazers. Let's take a look at what the Portland Trailblazers did right and wrong.

The Blazers had a great contribution form C.J. McCollum as he had 33 points and shot 7-11 from 3 point range. He wasn't enough to give this team the win though. Even though Batum had a horrible shooting night, he still had 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Damian Lillard only shot 1-8 from the 3 point line. He had shot like that all series. Arron Afflalo just couldn't shoot. He was scoreless in the game. The Blazers also had 18 less rebounds than the Grizzlies. All of those things contributed to the loss in game 5 for the grizzlies.

The Grizzlies just played great. They controlled the boards, dominated in the paint, and played great defense. One thing they could have done better is shoot the 3. They only shot about 7% from three point range. That's pretty sad. Defensively, Tony Allen played great. He had 5 steals and 2 blocks. The Grizzlies had an astonishing defensive rating of 94.6. Beno Udrih played absolutley horrible. He had a defensive rating of 111 and an offensive rating of 65.3! That's a net rating of -46.6. Absolutely horrible! Udrih was great in pretty much every game of the series, but game 5 he couldn't do anything. He is going to have to play better in the next series if Conley is still out. If Conley is back, I don't see this guy play much if he continues to play like this. Of course, this was just one game. I expect him to bounce back in game 1 against the Warriors. 

The Grizzlies are moving on. I will miss the Trailblazers and all their crazy three point shooting they gave us. I wish the Grizzlies best of luck going into the next series. They are going to need it.

Grizzlies VS Trailblazers (game 4)

Final Score: Trailblazers win 99-92



Grizzlies lead series 3-1

The Blazers finally get one. It took them a while. It really didn't look like they'd get one either. Damien Lillard finally started to get his game together, and you could see how great the Blazers can be. But they can do better. Let's see how.

The Trailblazers get the win. How? Let's look at Lillard. He had 32 points to go along with 7 assists. The guy that stood out to me was Nicolas Batum. He had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also had the best defensive rating on his team. The biggest thing was Meyers Leonard and C.J. McCollum. They both a plus/minus of 23 and had the best offensive ratings for their team. They needed to step up as Afflalo ended the night shooting 0-5 from the field and had no points. They are going to have to have him step up in the next game though.

The Grizzlies played great. They were missing Mike Conley but that can't be an excuse. Zach Randolph can't be shooting 20 shots and only making 6. He also can't have 3 of the Grizzlies 9 turnovers. That can't happen. They also need to rebound better. The lost in the rebounding section 40-50. The Grizzlies should be the best rebounding team. Get a body on Batum. Other than that they looked pretty solid. Gasol was regular Gasol with 21 points and 6 assists. But he only had 7 rebounds. The Grizzlies are a great team and they just need to step up their game a little bit. If they can do that, they will win this series. 

Grizzlies VS Trailblazers (game 2)

The Trailblazers are having a tough time in this series. Let's take a look at their problems. First off, Damien Lillard was shooting horribly. He shot 30% from the floor and 20% from three point range. Next off, they didn't do too great on offense on passing and getting open shots as Coach Nick described. They shot 71 contested shots and only 41 open shots. They only made 19 of 31 shots at the rim. They are simply not getting open shots and not running through the offense. If they are to win at home now, they have to run their offense.

The Grizzlies were great. One thing that they did well of was getting Marc Gasol touches. Marc Gasol had 5 assists in the game and 86 touches in all. The next thing was their defense. It was great, and their bench was even better. Green, Koufos, Udrih, and Carter all had a defensive rating under 90. That is great. Everyone on the Grizzlies had a positive net rating as all of their offensive ratings were better than their defensive, while all of the Trailblazers were a negative net rating. The next thing is that they limited their turnovers to only 5. That is great as the Traiblazers will feed off of transition points. If they keep this up, they will be moving on.

Grizzlies lead series 1-0

Trailblazers could not take the Grizzlies as the Grizzlies had a blow-out win. The Grizzlies had great production from the bench and played great inside defense. Let's take a look at the Trailblazers and what they need to change next game.

Damien Lillard is an inconsistent player. He will score 30 one night and 0 the next. This was a night where he just couldn't make anything. He was 0-6 from three point range and finished with 14 points. For them to even have a chance to win a game, they need Lillard to produce. Aldridge is doing his part. He had a total of 32 points and 14 rebounds. That is not enough though. Nicolas Batum just has to keep doing what he is doing, which is everything. This guy is doing everything out on the court. Keep it up Batum.

The Grizzlies are doing great. They are playing great defense, getting everyone involved, and their bench is producing. Udrih had 20 points off the bench. They can work on their spacing a little. Sometimes it seems like they are all cramped up on the court and they need to space out a little. The only other thing is for Conley to get better. He is a crucial part of their offense and defense.
